The Edge: A New Training Opportunity for CVCRC Members

Leanne Stanley is a passionate coach who was recently inspired to get more involved in the CVCRC community. This fall, CVCRC members have the opportunity to participate in a training series that emphasizes skill development and community building.

Location: Training sessions will take place at Courtenay Marina Park, locally known as Airport Park.

Session Schedule:

  • Thurs. Oct 17, Thurs. Oct 24, Sun. Oct 27

  • Break (Leanne will be in Hong Kong)

  • Thurs. Nov 14, Sun. Nov 17, Thurs. Nov 21, Sun. Nov 24, Thurs. Nov 28

  • Break (CORA AGM weekend)

  • Sun. Dec 8 (Holiday dress-up optional)

Timing: Thursdays will begin at 4:30 pm, and Sundays at 10 am.

Participants are encouraged to arrive early and be prepared with their paddle and water bottle in hand by the start time. To stay comfortable, keep jackets on during the initial briefing.

What to Expect: Sessions will alternate between OC6 and small boat training, depending on participant interest. Each session will cover topics such as:

  • Routines, warmups, intention setting, stroke theory, steering, seat responsibilities, crew blend, individual stroke analysis, and practice in heavy water conditions.

  • Emphasis will be on skill development and technical focus rather than an intense physical workout. Participants should be prepared for drills, discussions, and slower-paced practice that may involve rest and drifting.

What to Bring:

  • Paddle (OC6 and small boat if applicable)

  • PFD (mandatory)

  • Hydration

  • Warm paddling clothing and layers

  • Dry clothes for after the session

  • Booties or gloves (optional, based on personal preference)

  • An open mind

  • Notebook or note-taking app for post-session notes

Safety Guidelines:

  • Wearing a PFD is required at all times. This not only provides warmth but ensures safety in case assistance is needed.

  • Small boats must be equipped with a leash, and lights will be necessary as November sessions approach.

  • Participants should dress in warm, layered clothing suitable for cold water conditions and have dry clothes available post-session.

  • Please read our Winter Paddling Policy.

Non-Members: Anyone who is not a member of CVCRC must complete a club waiver before attending their first session.

Fees: Session fees should be sent via email transfer in advance to Leanne Stanley: thestanleyedge@gmail.com

Full Program (9 sessions)

  • Members $275

  • Non-Members $295

Drop-In (per session, preregistration required)

  • Members $35

  • Non-Members $40

Participants can pay for the full program upfront or on a session-by-session basis.

Weather Contingency Plan: In the event of severe weather (e.g., thunderstorms or temperatures below -5°C), sessions will shift to a dryland focus. Alternative sessions will be held at Leanne’s home gym, which includes a paddle machine and training space. Participants should check their email for location updates if the weather is questionable.

Leanne is excited to bring this training opportunity to CVCRC and looks forward to seeing everyone at the first session. Questions are welcome, so feel free to reach out to Leanne with questions!

See you on the water!
